  • What are some goals I can make for myself in the next two weeks?

  1. My favorite genre of music has been hip-hop since I started buying my own music. I listen everyday, so it is a big part of my life. I want to learn from this class how to effectively translate my ideas and opinions into a lyrically entertaining rap. I also want to keep it real and unique, different from what artists are putting out now.
I am familiar with the other half of hip-hop music which is the production, so a goal for me is to focus more on the lyricism in music. I also want to explore some specific lyrics that may have deeper connotation I did not notice before.

  2. I would like to understand the culture of hip-hop. I find myself day to day listening to hip-hop and would like to get deeper then the beat. My goal for the next two weeks is to get in to meaning of what the artist is speaking about.

  3. I want the opportunity to dedicate time to writing down the poetry that I come up with. I hope to gain that time and a portfolio that portrays my thoughts and my style. For the next two week time period my goal is to generate enough poetry so that I am able to perform at the next Open Mic night at EA. Also throughout that two week period I'd like to find who I am as a writer and find my personal style that fits who I am.

  4. I chose this class initially because I like to write and wanted to increase my understanding of poetry and song. By the end of the class, I want to have a broader interpretation of poetry and be more knowledgable about the role that language and poetry play in hip hop. While I listen to hip hop, writing and understanding the language does not come easily to me. I would like to have a portfolio that represents several different types of writing, rather than just the poetry that I am used to writing.

  6. Hip-hop and rap have an important role in my life because of the mix of lyrics and music that backs it up, which combines two creative processes. I listen to hip-hop because it's an entertaining genre where individuals have their own take on similar styles, and I'm also interested in the culture. In the next two weeks I want to learn about more underground hip-hop artists.

  7. I have always been interested in poetry, whether it be writing my own or listening to spoken word. However, I have not always known much about hip-hop music. Throughout this class, I am interested in learning the connection between spoken word poetry and hip-hop music. I believe bridging the gap between the two will better my overall knowledge. In other words, I hope to gain a better understanding of hip hop music in this course as I believe this will help when writing my own poetry and vise versa. I love music of all kinds and I also love poetry. But during this class, my main goal will be to discover what I don't know about both and figure out how to apply that to my everyday life.

  8. I chose this class because I enjoy writing poetry and listening to hip hop. Although it is not my favorite genre of music, I have always appreciated the work of hip hop artists, specifically the lyrics. With this class, I would like to strengthen my writing and gain a better understanding of the process of writing lyrics for hip hop music. I am interested in learning about the processes that artists go through when creating their music. I would also like to leave this class with a strong portfolio of my own written work.

  11. I wanted to explore the roots of my favorite genre more than I had ever before. Rap music has meant a lot to me my whole life ever since I was a little kid. Without this genre. 12. I chose this class because hip hop is my favorite genre, and because I wanted to gain knowledge about other rappers, and other styles of rap that were popular in the other decades. In these two weeks, I would like to learn about all different styles of rap, and the way they affected the country in that time. I hope to gain insights about rap itself and how it was created.
