I chose the song "Waves" by Joey Bada$$, which her performed live on Jimmy Fallon with The Roots. I feel that this song speaks about what rap is supposed to be. In this song, he talks about the struggles of his life since he was born. He says "Since nine five, momma been working nine five..." He was born in 1995, and what he says here is that ever since he was born, his mother has been working hard for them to be able to live comfortably. The hardships that Joey Bada$$ had to endure in his childhood, are some of the original themes that fueled rap to be brought up in the 70's. He doesn't say anything about girls, or drugs, all he speaks about is how he was brought up in an environment where the only way to succeed is to work hard and that's what he's going to do until he is successful. In the music video, the song goes to an interlude by Tupac, and Tupac says that whatever he raps about is 100% real, and he isn't making up anything that he says. I think Joey put this quote in the middle of his song to show that he isn't making anything up, and he is rapping to be able to say that his hard work in life has paid off.
