I found this performance when listening to other spoken word performances. This was Guante's first poem to go viral on Tumblr and Facebook. His work is diverse in topic. This piece was a part of an album of work discussing society's expectations of men at any age and what masculinity requires. This piece, "Ten Responses to the Phrase 'Man Up'" begins with a simple response. He expresses it as the stereotypical one, but the next 8 are more complex and show his understanding of the false identity of men in today's world and his opposition to the stereotypical man. Finally, he ends with a single "no" for the 10th response. I found his performance mesmerizing. His dynamics bring so much more to the piece, which already has impressive writing. I think without his performance this piece would have less impact.
I had never seen this piece of spoken word before and I really enjoyed it. It was extremely powerful and had a great message that many people try to convey. However, I believe Guante conveys it perfectly, by keeping in simple yet strong and effective. He presents the topic in a very real way as opposed to something silly or stereotypical. Also, I agree his performance makes the writing that much more notable
